Starting From Scratch | The Big House Renovation, pt. 1

Writer: ShelleyShelley

There are different levels of renovation, and to be honest that word means different things to different people. To some it means a lick of paint and new carpets, to others it means 50% demolition and rebuild, a new roof or just new tiles.

Our approach to renovating has always been of the sympathetic nature. This means that when we take on a property to restore we work with what it is and what it has and not against it. Restoring original features and returning them where they may be missing, using materials appropriate to the build and the local environment and considering the period and style of the property when decorating and adding the finishing touches.

The level of renovation needed for the big house is essentially a full internal gut job. The layout is currently very confusing and even though the house itself is enormous it currently only has 3 (!) bedrooms. We will be removing internal walls and opening spaces up, adding in 4 more bedrooms plus bathrooms and ensuite shower rooms in appropriate places. Our architects, Thorne Wyness, have helped us to make more send of the space that the building offers and also to bring in more light via rooflights, velux and light tunnels. These are our plans, we'll split the house in two so we have two seperate sides that can also work as one large connected space on occasions when we need it to. the red line details the split between the two sides. The current layout looks nothing like this so this will be a significant chunk of work to rebuild the internal layout.

We'll be starting by focusing on the exterior: next week we're taking delivery of 24 new triple glazed alu-clad windows from Norway via Nordvest and once they are fitted we have a few roof repairs, fascia's and gutters and a massive external render repaint to work on.

The aim for the remainder of this year is to get the place sealed up and water tight and begin the internal rip out.
